It is the last week of Summer before we head back to school. Since my son has been away at camp I’m making some of his favorites to welcome him back home. I’m also sharing some tips to make those dishes into healthy kid favorites.
Having my son away at camp for the first time last week was SO HARD. Sure, I’ve been away on work trips and vacations with my husband. But every day I got to talk to him or Facetime with him. The only communication we had with him at camp was pictures and an occasional letter through the camp app. Believe me, we were glued to that app. I probably checked it every 15 minutes the first day. I got better once I sort of figured out the posting schedule. I can’t wait to have him home and hear all about camp.
Healthy Kid Favorites
To welcome my son home I’ve put some of his favorite meals on the menu this week. A few simple swaps are all it takes to make your kid’s favorite meals a little healthier. I would start by modifying one ingredient at a time. For more ideas on how to get your kids to eat healthier check out my post on How To Get Kids To Eat Healthy.
Here are some tips to make this week’s kid favorites menu items healthy kid favorites:
Pizza
- Use Whole Wheat Crust
- Use Thin Crust
- Use Whole Grain English Muffins for Crust
- Swap Regular Pepperoni for Turkey Pepperoni
- Use Part-Skim Mozzarella Cheese
Tacos
- Use Soft Corn Tortillas Instead of Hard (fried)
- Wrap Tacos in Lettuce
- Swap Ground Beef for Ground Turkey
