Being a working mom can sometimes be quite overwhelming.  Having a more flexible schedule or being able to work from home can help alleviate some of the overwhelm. The reasons to work from home vary depending on who you ask. For me working from home gives me the opportunity to efficiently earn an income and be there for my family.   I’ve outlined the top 4 reasons many people choose to work from home.

Top 4 Reasons To Work From Home
Save Time

The time I save by not having to commute to the office every day allows me to tend to other things like my family and household.  I really don’t understand how people sit in traffic every morning and again every afternoon.  Occasionally, I go into my company’s office, which can be a 30 minute to over an hour drive depending on when I leave and how bad traffic is.  Before, when I drove to an office every day, all I could think about is the million other things I could be doing with my time instead of sitting in traffic or driving 20 miles to sit in an office to pick up a phone and make calls.

Be There For Kids

Working from home gives me the flexibility to be there for my son.  I can easily be at his school for parties or other activities. I can drop him off at school in the mornings and pick him up in afternoons.  He’s at an age now (3rd Grade) where I can finish up my work when he gets home while he has a snack and unwinds before we start homework.  This doesn’t work so well for non school-aged kids.  Before Kindergarten, even though I worked from home, my son went to pre-school for the full day so I could work.

Save Money

Working from home can save you money, especially for moms.  Since you’re not driving into an office everyday you save money on gas.  If your child is old enough to entertain themselves so you can work you can also save money on after school care.  You also don’t have to pay for day care for those random holidays and half days of school.

Better Manage Your Household

Managing your household is so much easier when you work from home.  Yes, I throw a load of laundry on in the morning and switch it to the dryer during my “work day” and put it away during my “lunch time”  (See My 2 Day a Week Laundry System Here). Since I work from home I can cook dinner during my “lunch time” if I need to and get my son to soccer or baseball or football practice on time, most of the time at least.

Working moms who drive to an office every day, work all day, commute back home, get their kids to activities, put dinner on the table and keep their household together amaze me.  If you only manage to do a couple of those things you deserve an award, and a glass or two of wine.

If you’re finding yourself overwhelmed in any of these areas, finding a way to work from home at least a couple days a week may be the answer.  My post on How To Get A Work From Home Job will give you the tips you need to make that happen.
